Could Downloading a Dating App Be Good for Your Career?

Love is in the air… or is that just the faint smell of job hunt desperation?? 👃 According to a recent Glassdoor community poll, nearly a third of workers are now using or considering dating apps for career purposes. Yup, that’s right, nothing is sacred anymore, not even your well-curated dating profile. ❤️‍🔥

🧐 Why TF would people use dating apps to find jobs?

Desperate times call for desperate measures: the fact that more and more people are even considering this option points to a much larger trend in just how competitive the job search has become. Here’s some proof: 65% of people say finding a job has become more challenging, citing competition as the main hurdle, according to recent LinkedIn research. Going above and beyond to make professional connections isn’t necessarily a new concept, even if swiping right for them is.

🤷‍♀️ Is this even allowed?

While dating apps can’t monitor or enforce what kinds of conversations you’re allowed to have, it’s worth noting that Tinder’s Community Guidelines specifically discourage users from using the app for professional networking: “make personal connections, not biz ones.”

On the flip side, the CEO of Grindr actually encourages use of the app as a career networking tool: “I personally have hired or had a professional relationship with several people I’ve met on the app over the years,” Grindr CEO George Arison told The Wall Street Journal. According to the company, a quarter of Grindr users are there to network.

💰 Could it actually be effective?

According to the Glassdoor poll, some respondents say it has been for them:

"I've matched with girls that wanted internships, and I genuinely helped them out,” — Manager

"I've run into more people doing business on dating apps than I have people dating, if you know what I mean." — Software Engineer

"Got my first internship from a B4 partner I met up with to get sushi and other things, and I asked for an internship and full-time job after I found out he was married." — Senior Associate

💃 Should I try it out?

While the evidence is (somewhat) compelling, it’s hard to ignore the glaring HR violations and potential murky territory of leveraging a romantic connection for a professional one. Plus, how would you feel if you found out someone only swiped right on you because they want a job at your company?

TL;DR: We’re big supporters of going above and beyond to pursue the job you want, but we suggest swiping left on this method. Cold DMing on LinkedIn doesn’t sound so cringe anymore, does it? 😉
