Talking Points
For the next four Fridays, we’re talking about what’s in your bank account. 👀 💸 Did your palms just get all sweaty? You’re not alone. In our most recent Girlboss audience survey, 40% of readers listed their finances as their #1 source of stress in life. We listen and we don’t judge! 💗 And when asked about which topics you’d like to see covered in Girlboss, financial and investing advice was the #1 request.
So, that’s why we teamed up with Facet*, the financial planning membership, to tackle your biggest money woes and help you make 2025 your year of financial growth. Today, we’re talking about all of the little (big) things you can start doing today to get on track with help from Meagen Wagner, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM professional at Facet.
How to Set Yourself Up for Financial Success in 2025
1. Start with your financial goals
Do you want to double your income? Pay off your student debt? Save up for a big purchase like your first home, a new car, or your dream European vacation this summer? “Understand what it is you want to accomplish first before throwing money at random accounts and investments,” says Wagner. It also helps to break down each goal into three to five more tangible goals that you can action on (like asking for a raise at work, using an expense tracker, or starting a side hustle to earn some extra cash).
2. Understand your spending
When in doubt, document everything—yes, everything—that you spend in a month. It can literally be in your Notes app or in an old journal. Every time you spend money, you record the amount and the category. Before you tally everything up at the end of the month, estimate how much you think you spent in each category—eating out, shopping, groceries—then actually add it up and compare. “Areas where reality is far different from your ideal should be the easiest to start adjusting,” says Wagner.
3. Open a high-yield savings account for your emergency fund
This is like the crock pot of banking accounts. 🍲 You set it and forget it (kinda). Instead of your hard-earned cash just sitting in a regular ol’ checking account or low/no-yield savings account, you are earning interest on your savings. Shop around and compare the interest rates at different banks and brokerages to find your best fit.
4. Get to know your employee benefits
Did you know that only half of employees understand their benefits? According to Forbes, up to 80% of companies reported that their employees do not open or read benefit materials. Yikes! You can miss a lot when you don’t read the fine print, like employer-sponsored retirement plans, company match programs (basically, free money), health plans, legal services, employee assistance, and so much more.
🤑 Community challenge of the week: Do an audit of all your subscriptions (do you really need five streaming services?) and come up with a plan to invest your monthly savings.

THE STUFF WE LOVE
Staff Picks
The At-Home Body SnatcherYou already know (and love) the NuFACE facial toning device (psst… it’s the secret to getting cheekbones and a jawline sculpted to the Gods), but did you know that the brand also has one for your body? 👀 The NuBODY is the only FDA-cleared, clinically proven, at-home microcurrent device designed to tone, smooth, and firm the look of skin. It has four large treatment spheres (the facial device only has two) and three microcurrent intensities. All it takes is just five minutes per day, five days a week for visible results after 30 days. No expensive monthly spa treatment needed—and it’s completely painless! Can your body gua sha or dry brush do that? Didn’t think so. And get this: the original retail price is $399 but right now, it’s over $150 off on QVC. First-time QVC shoppers also get an extra $15 off their first $35+ order with code NEWYEAR15.* *This link is sponsored |
The Stubborn Morning Alarm“I’m not usually one to hit snooze a dozen times, but this dark winter weather has me S-T-R-U-G-G-L-I-N-G to get out of bed. 😴 Enter Alarmy—the app that ensures you’ll actually wake up on time. Known as ‘the world’s most annoying alarm,’ it makes you solve math problems or snap a pic of your bathroom sink to turn it off. It’s loud 🔊, it’s effective, and it turns my groggy mornings into productive (and chaotic) ones. Ready, set, rise!” — Kate, brand partnerships manager |
The Brightest, Creamiest Matcha“Nothing brightens up my morning like a frothy, creamy, bright green matcha, and after buying a few different disappointing matcha powders that ended up more grey than green, I’m officially in love with this option from Golde. It’s certainly pricey compared to the other brands you might see in your grocery store, but believe me when I say it is so deeply worth it (plus, it still ends up being wayyyy cheaper than going to a cafe). My current perfect matcha ratio is 2 teaspoons matcha powder whisked with ¼ cup water, then finished off with ½ cup milk and 1 teaspoon of sweetener. Thank me later!” — Lara, contributor |
