Dealing with Difficult People Can *Literally* Take Years off Your Life

Beware of energy vampires!

Lara here, Girlboss’ contributing writer! 👋

In case you needed even more justification to set healthy boundaries with your coworkers, a new study found that people who leave you feeling drained can actually accelerate biological aging. We like to call these people “energy vampires.” 🧛 The cherry on top? 🍒 Women feel these impacts more than men (classic).

Other stuff the Girlboss team is yapping about on Slack:

Period Protection That Lets You Sleep Soundly (Finally!)

Victoria here, Girlboss’ executive editor. 👋 Is there anything worse than trying to get comfortable in bed wearing an overnight pad the size of a small canoe? 🛶

As a heavy period girlie, this was my monthly struggle until I switched over to Knix’s Super Leakproof® Dream Short™. 🌙 Designed for overnight protection, they absorb about 5.5 super tampons’ worth of liquid (mind. blown.), so you can sleep peacefully without stressing about ruining your crisp white sheets.

Even better? Knix has a pack of two pairs for $80 (you save $16)—plus a free wash bag. Choose your size and mix and match your choice of colors (from classic black and navy to flowers and polka dots). Just toss them in the wash, wear them again and again, and say goodbye to disposable products for good.

Comfortable coverage for every leak, all night long, so you can sleep like a log. 🪵

Difficult People Can Literally Take Years off Your Life

You know those people who feel like a real-life battery drain? 🪫 The ones who are always grumpy, complaining, or creating problems seemingly out of nowhere? 🙄

According to a new study by PNAS, those agitating, grating voices are “hasslers,” and their negativity can make you age faster. (And to be clear, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with aging—we just don’t need annoying coworkers speeding it up.)

They analyzed participants' saliva for biological aging markers and found that each additional hassler was linked to a roughly 1.5% faster pace of aging. Plus, women reported more hasslers than men. Considering how many annoying AF coworkers you have, this is bad news!!! 😱

Here’s how to deal:

Set a time limit

Kind of like limiting your screen time, limiting your hassler time is the most straightforward method for avoiding the negative biological consequences of their presence.

A lot of the time, hasslers are people we deal with on the regular: whether it’s your Negative Nancy coworker or even a family member who just can’t get their sh*t together. The reality is, cutting these people out of your life isn’t always feasible (or desired!), but finding ways to set boundaries, like having a hard stop on Zoom calls or popping in for a quick coffee instead of a full dinner, can ease the stress they cause.

🗣️ Communicate your needs

Depending on the relationship you have with your hassler, having an open conversation with them about how their words and attitude affect you can go a long way.

If every conversation with your dad winds up being a lecture about all the things you could be doing better in your life, this could be a ripe opportunity to address these conflicts and find a better way forward (think of the years added to your life as a sweet bonus 😜).

🤗 Invest in other relationships

According to Byungkyu Lee, the lead author of the study, “If you have enough non-hasslers in your network or environment, there might be some kind of calming effects on your aging,” he told The Washington Post.

Many studies have shown that healthy companionship can increase your lifespan, boost happiness, and lower stress; it’s just important to determine which relationships charge your battery vs. drain it. Girls' nights exist for a reason!
