No New Job? No Problem
The grass isn't always greener.
JANUARY 29, 2025
Talking Points
If You’re Too Busy
We know how tempting it is to get caught up in chasing the next best job (six in 10 employees want a new job in 2025, according to a recent-ish survey), but today we’re offering a gentle reminder that the grass isn’t always greener. 💚 Sometimes the job you’re already in can be the best one for you right now—especially in a challenging job market where even stable industries seem to be shaking things up. In the spirit of the Year of the Snake and a new Lunar New Year today, we’re shedding what no longer serves you and sliding into a fresh new perspective on work. 🐍 It’s all about framing, baby!
Note: If you have a toxic boss or are in a workplace that is affecting your mental health, we’re not saying you should just “ride it out.” This chart will help you decide if it’s time to quit.
💪 How to Stay Motivated at the Same Old Job
When every other IG and LinkedIn post is about someone you know scoring their next big break or dream job, it’s easy to feel like you should be doing more too. 😒 And while we certainly support you chasing your dreams, sometimes recognizing that you’re exactly where you need to be can be the most valuable thing you can do for your career. 👏 Sure, a resume from many different companies can show your upward mobility and wide-ranging skills, but a resume that shows longer-term growth at fewer places can be just as appealing to future employers, too. 🫂 Here’s how you can make the most of your current role.
🌱 Grow where you can
Of course, getting a raise or getting promoted is probably at the top of your wishlist, but if that isn’t in the cards this year because of factors outside your control (ie. company budgets or internal structures), that doesn’t mean you should throw in the towel.
Instead of fixating on all the ways your work is taking advantage of you, think about the ways you can take advantage of the opportunities your work provides. Does your company have a budget set aside for employee education? Make your case and take that class on the subject you’ve always wanted to learn more about! Is there someone in your company whose career you admire? Ask them to mentor you! Even better, ask them to do it over coffee on work time when you can both get paid for it and enjoy your favorite matcha latte at the same time. 😈 Growth doesn’t always need to be measured by salaries and titles, and finding creative ways to expand your knowledge and experience can help renew your excitement for the work you do.
👍 Appreciate the good
Once upon a time, the job you’re in now was probably that dream job you couldn’t wait to start. It’s easy to lose sight of that after a year or two in any job, but as author and time management coach Elizabeth Grace Saunders told Fast Company, it’s also important to remember what made you want this job in the first place, and what you appreciate about it.
“Try to think through any of the things that make you happy,” she says. “Maybe it’s that you get to work from home two days a week or that you like your coworkers or that there’s free coffee in the break room.” Conversely, think about the things you might lose if you left this role: things like a short commute, an easy-going boss or flexible hours are all easy to take for granted until you no longer have them. 👀
🧘 Find better work-life balance
A major perk of being comfortable in your role is that you know what’s worth stressing over and what isn’t. 😘 Unlike a new job where you’re constantly trying to impress and keep up appearances, the earned knowledge and skill you have in your current role can be a real asset, especially when it comes to finding better work-life balance (emphasis on the life).
Make a dedicated effort to take a proper lunch break, leave work on time, and unplug from work when you’re not on the clock: it’s a luxury you’ve earned! And hey, if you need an extra coffee break when you know your boss is off picking up her kids (a perk of being a long-term employee is knowing your boss’s schedule, after all), we say go for it.

THE STUFF WE LOVE
Staff Picks
Your Personal Health Gut Check“I say ‘gut check’ a lot during my 9-5—usually about a bold idea or a tricky email to a client—but now it’s taking on a whole new meaning thanks to Seed’s DS-01® Daily Synbiotic. This 2-in-1 prebiotic and probiotic has become my secret weapon for staying balanced through jam-packed workdays. It supports digestion, regularity 💩, skin health, and even gut immunity (because, let’s be real, nobody has time for that). Whether I’m crushing back-to-back Zoom calls or running between the office and errands, this tiny green capsule delivers a powerful (gut 😉) punch. Take it first thing in the morning with a big ol’ glass of water and let it keep you feeling your best—inside and out—all day long.*” — Kate, brand partnerships manager *This link is sponsored |
The Travel-Friendly Backpack“After my beloved (and worn out) backpack left me scrambling when the strap broke at the airport (traumatizing), I’ve been on the hunt for an upgraded replacement that’s roomy enough for travel but compact enough for everyday use. I put this backpack from Lojel to the test on a recent ski trip to Colorado and was very pleased with the results: I’m generally frazzled AF when I’m at the airport, so anything that helps me stay organized is a win in my books, and I really loved that this bag has three compartments with five internal pockets, a laptop sleeve, and a key strap. Plus, the luggage handle made it convenient to stack on top of my carry-on. This backpack is just compact enough to look proportional on my 5’1” frame while still being roomy enough to store my plane essentials. Ideal!” — Lara, contributor |
The Non-Slip Workout Socks“You know when you're in the middle of a Pilates class, holding a downward dog, and your socks start slipping and bunching? It’s the worst and so distracting. I found these non-slip yoga/Pilates/barre socks (in the cutest neutral colors) on Amazon, and I had to give them a try. Honestly, I was so impressed—they stayed put the entire class, they’re breathable since they’re 80% cotton, and they’re the perfect length. And for that price too? Unbeatable!” — Kamela, content marketing manager |
