Talking Points

Welcome back to another special edition of Financial Fridays with Facet*, the financial planning membership. 💰 💸 Today, we chatted with Colby, a 33-year-old chemist, about how she went from being an impulsive shopper to learning how to mindfully spend (and save) with the help of Facet. Next up on her financial to-do list? Paying off her $70,000 in student debt while remaining debt-free and continuing to invest her hard-earned cash. Yes, it’s possible!

How I Squashed My Impulsive Shopping Habits
How did Facet help you gain money confidence?
“Facet is a breath of fresh air when it comes to money management. The financial planner they paired me with has taught me so much about my personal financial situation and also what’s possible. He understands money is emotional so we have very real conversations. It’s more relational than transactional.”
What are some financial lessons you would tell your younger self?
“Every little bit adds up just like it subtracts. Put as much as you can, as often as you can, into stocks or at least a high-yield savings account and watch it grow.”
What were some money habits that you had to break?
“Impulse shopping. Now I like to put the price of the potential impulse buy into a spreadsheet and keep track of how much money I'm saving instead.”
Could you share a money management win you had recently?
“Getting rid of things I don't need and really loving and using the things I keep. As a recovering impulse shopper, I always felt like I needed something else, just one more thing. I spent some time evaluating my needs based on my daily habits and routines, and optimized around those. Also, I made a lot of money selling the excess stuff!”
What advice do you have for women who feel like they're "behind" on their financial journey?
“Use that pain to do something different now. The only way to get ahead of where you are today is to start moving from that spot. If it's overwhelming, start small. If you put $25 a week into a high-yield savings account every month of 2025 ($100/month), you'll have $1,200 more savings than you had last year. That number only increases the more you put into it, and potentially even more if you put it into the market.”
What's one financial goal of yours for the next five years?
“Pay off $70,000 of student loans while remaining debt-free and continuing to invest.”

THE STUFF WE LOVE
Staff Picks
The Dad Cap Made for Frolicking“Sometimes, the girlboss just wants to ‘girl moss’ and reconnect with nature. 🌱 You've seen the viral tweet, but did you know that the woman who wrote it, Daisy Alioto, is also the brilliant brains behind Dirt, a next-gen entertainment brand using emerging technology to tell the coolest stories about culture and collecting? Their newsletter about digital pop culture is also a must-subscribe. Daisy turned her iconic ‘girl moss’ phrase into a vintage-style baseball hat—and I need it in my life right this second. It’s perfect for brunch or gardening or effortlessly hiding greasy, three-day hair. Pre-order now to get it in March!” — Victoria, executive editor |
The Perfect Wedding Guest Dress“We all have that one thing in our online shopping carts that we compulsively check to see if it’s gone on sale. For me, it’s this gorgeous organza dress from Anthropologie. I have quite a few spring and fall weddings coming up, and I think this would just be the most fabulous thing to wear as a wedding guest. It’s floaty and elegant but not tight or constricting, so I can see myself comfortably wearing it for a full day of lively wedding celebrations. Manifesting an Anthro sale ASAP!!” — Lara, contributor |
The Soundtrack to Your Weekend“I’ll admit that I don’t typically listen to a lot of rap (my most-played is currently a chaotic blend of Taylor Swift and the Wicked soundtrack, oops). But when Doechii won Best Rap Album at the Grammys over the weekend and made history as the third woman to ever win in the category, my curiosity was piqued. I put the album on the next morning, and I’ve been listening nonstop ever since (‘Denial is a River’ is my current fave). It’s so badass to witness a woman at the top of her game creating new and interesting art, and as someone who cares deeply about lyrics, I’m so mad at myself for not getting into Doechii sooner.” — Lara |

Weekend Plans

👀 To watch: It’s Super Bowl weekend, baby! The Kansas City Chiefs are facing off against the Philadelphia Eagles, and we’ll be watching on the edge of our seats to see if the Chiefs win a historic threepeat while Taylor Swift cheers them on (if anyone can make it happen, it’s her).
👩🍳 To cook: Even if you don’t plan on watching the big game, whip up some of Alison Roman’s Gorgeous Chili to get in the game day spirit.
📚 To read: If you’re craving a book you just can’t put down, the deliciously dark new thriller Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney is just what the doctor ordered.
