Lara here, Girlboss’ contributing writer! 👋

As someone who moved to a new city where I didn’t know a single soul, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to make friends in a new place. 🫶 And it’s not just me: A recent Bumble For Friends (BFF) survey found that women who have moved to new cities are craving meaningful friendships, but aren’t totally sure how to build them. 🫂

Which is why we tapped BFF expert Holly Pound to explain how you can actually make friends, no matter where you are. Spoiler alert: you’re not the only one looking!

It's 3 p.m., your second coffee wore off an hour ago, what do you reach for?

The correct answer is: Bloom Sparkling Energy. 🥤

This isn't your average neon-colored energy drink. Bloom is crafted with zero sugar and 180mg of natural caffeine from green coffee bean extract for a clean, powerful boost—no crash or jitters.

With functional ingredients like l-theanine and ginseng, Bloom doesn't just taste really good, but it actually helps sharpen your focus and crush that mid-day fatigue, too.

Right now, Bloom Sparkling Energy Drinks are on major sale for Prime Day, a.k.a. the perfect time to try out their variety pack. 👀

How to Make Friends in a New City (You Can Do It!)

When you move to a new place, it’s easy to assume you’re the only person in the whole city looking for new friends. 😔 And we are delighted to inform you that couldn’t be further from the truth. 😘

According to a recent survey by Bumble for Friends, 73% of women ages 20-29 who have moved to a new city within the past year want more opportunities to meet people who are also actively looking for friends, and 40% say a strong friendship circle would make their new city feel like home. 🏡

With that in mind, we tapped on BFF’s Senior Director of Marketing, Holly Pound, to explain how you can actually form meaningful friendships based on data from real women who are looking to do the same. 👯‍♀️

🧐 What works best for people looking to make friends after moving to a new city?

“The most effective way to make friends after moving is to stop trying to do it alone! Put yourself in environments where everyone is there for the same reason: community and connection. Our research found that nearly three-quarters of women want more opportunities to meet people who are actively looking for friends, and 71% said structured group settings like dinners or classes make it easier to connect.”

What's one thing women can do before they move to set themselves up for friendship success?

“Before you move, spend some time thinking about what friendships you need in this season of your life. We often focus on how we're going to meet people, but it's just as important to think about who we want to connect with. Every stage of life comes with different friendship needs. Maybe you're looking for a close-knit support system, friends to explore your new city with, or people who share your interests and lifestyle. Having that clarity can help you be more intentional about where you invest your time and energy.”

🏃‍♀️ What kinds of activities are the best for meeting new people?

“On BFF, some of the most popular groups are run clubs, book clubs, walking groups, gaming communities, and other interest-based gatherings. Our research found that 68% of women feel friendships formed through doing things together are more genuine, and 63% say shared activities have helped them build more meaningful connections. Shared interests bring people together, while recurring activities provide the consistency, conversation, and anticipation that help friendships grow.”

If someone only has a few hours a week to dedicate to meeting people, where should they focus their energy?

“Consistency matters much more than the number of events you’re attending. If you only have a few hours a week, choose one activity, group, or community you genuinely enjoy and do your best to commit! Relationships are built through repeated interactions, not one-off encounters. The more familiar faces you see over time, the more opportunities there are for conversations to deepen into real friendships.”
