Social Media—As We Know It—Looks Bleak

Talking Points
First, it was Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter (ahem, X), which he’s now using as a platform to amplify his right-wing political views. Last week, it was Instagram and Facebook’s dangerous new policies from Mark Zuckerberg that remove fact-checking and “dramatically reduce the amount of censorship” a.k.a. creating a breeding ground for hate speech that targets vulnerable minority groups. With a sprinkle of “corporate masculine energy.” 🤢
*Takes a big inhale.* And most recently, President Donald Trump’s “heroic saving” of TikTok, where he pitched the idea that the US would get a 50% ownership of the platform. It’s ironic because, during his first term as President, he tried to ban the app. Perfect timing that this all happened the night before his inauguration. 🤔
The mass social media platforms we used to know (and love) are getting a conservative makeover right in front of our eyes. So, where the hell do we go from here?
Social Media—As We Know It—Looks Bleak
If you’re feeling lost in this social media hellscape (dw, same), we compiled a list of some alternative platforms and spaces that you can flock to during these scary times.
Bluesky: Dubbed the “Twitter alternative,” the app added 7.6 monthly active users in November, after Trump’s election win, according to research from Similarweb. That’s a whopping increase of 295.4%! In an interview with Forbes, CEO Jay Graber said that Bluesky is actively “billionaire-proofing” the platform to make sure a similar takeover doesn’t happen.
Diem: “If ChatGPT and Reddit had a baby, but designed for the girls, gays, and theys—it’s a search engine that feels more like asking questions in a girls’ bathroom than spiraling while searching the internet alone,” writes founder Emma Bates in a recent newsletter.
“While we also support free speech, we recognize that without stringent community guidelines, moderation, and protections, people will incorrectly utilize the term to bully, harass, and exhibit behavior that would be illegal if it were to happen in the real world on the street,” she continues.
If you want to learn more about the incredible work Bates is doing, listen to her Girlboss Radio episode here.
noplace: This MySpace-meets-Twitter app for Gen Z—founded by Gen Zer and serial startup entrepreneur Tiffany Zhong—hit #1 on the App Store last summer. It’s like a global group chat with a nostalgic, old-school social media feel. "People crave connection more than ever," Zhong told Business Insider. "All the social media platforms are more so media than they are social. That's why people hang out in the comment sections of TikTok.”
And if all else fails, there’s always your unhinged group chat: quite possibly the last sacred space on your phone. Long live the group chat!
We want to hear from you! Are you planning on staying on Facebook, Instagram, X, or TikTok? What are other alternative platforms/digital spaces you’re finding solace in? Tell us your thoughts (as always, answers are anonymous), and they could be featured in an upcoming newsletter.

How to get the most out of LinkedIn 💼
LinkedIn is more than just a platform for job seekers. There are plenty of ways that any professional can use LinkedIn to advance their career when they know how to get the most from it. Style Nine to Five career expert Christie Lohr shares five tips on how to use LinkedIn to sharpen your career trajectory.
✨ Have a stellar headline. It’s the first thing recruiters see and what grabs their attention. Instead of listing your job title and company, showcase your expertise and unique value. Your headline is your digital introduction—make it unforgettable! For example, Christie's LinkedIn headline is: Your Fairy Jobmother | Founder, Style Nine to Five | Recruiter for Top Brands | Resume Expert.
🔄 Regularly update your profile. Keep your profile current by updating your experience, skills, and achievements. A polished, updated profile increases visibility and credibility, making it easier for recruiters and professionals to find and connect with you. Regular updates also showcase your career growth and expertise.
👍 Engage with posts: Actively like, comment, and share relevant content to stay visible and contribute to industry conversations. Meaningful engagement demonstrates your interest and knowledge in your field, builds relationships, and can attract opportunities by showcasing your professional personality and insights.
🤝 Network with professionals in your field: Connect with peers, mentors, and industry leaders to expand your professional circle. Just met a new client? Add them to your network. The same goes for vendors, colleagues, and event leaders. Engaging in meaningful conversations, joining groups, and attending virtual events also fosters valuable relationships that can lead to job opportunities and future collaborations.
➕ Follow people in your industry: Follow thought leaders, influencers, and companies to stay informed about industry trends and news. This keeps you updated on developments in your field and helps tailor your feed with relevant content, allowing you to engage intelligently and expand your professional knowledge.
👀 Read your feed: Taking the time to scroll through your LinkedIn feed doesn’t just give you the opportunity to engage with the posts you see—it’s also a great way to get your wheels turning and can lead to interesting ideas and insights. Exposing yourself to fresh thoughts on topics in your industry sparks your inspiration and gives you tidbits of information that you can bring to team meetings or apply to projects that you’re working on.

The Little Black Dress of Your Shoe Closet“I know, I know. Sneakers at the office are de rigueur (if you work in a casual corporate setting), but I’d like to start a petition to officially bring back heels because how stinkin’ sexy are these strappy sandals from Elizée? Imagine strutting down your office’s hallway, on the way to ask your boss for a raise, and hearing the click-clack of your heels on the floor? 🥵 Okay, confidence!!! These four-inch python-print leather stunners aren’t like any other stiletto on the market. They’re handcrafted in Florence, Italy, by shoemakers who are true artists at their craft. I’m talking: heirloom-quality shoes that are built to last a lifetime. And don’t even sweat about blisters or jammed toes—their innovative memory foam cushioned insole means all-day (and night) comfort. Because you’re a woman on the move, duh.” — Victoria, executive editor *This link is sponsored |
The Minimalist Must-Have“If I had to bring one makeup item with me to a deserted island (please indulge this hypothetical) I’d bring this one complexion stick from MERIT! It’s not quite a concealer and also not quite a foundation, but it’s replaced my need for both in my makeup bag. It has a great creamy texture, it’s pigmented enough to conceal any blemishes (or dark circles from late-night writing sessions), and it sits great on my skin—kind of like a BB cream! Nope, no cakey finish here, just effortless-looking skin. As for how long it would keep me alive on an island? 🌴I can’t say, but I know I’ll look fab!” — Jennifer, contributor |
The Desk Gadget That Makes Mornings Better“It’s physically impossible for me to finish my morning cup of tea before it goes cold. I always end up getting distracted, and most of the time, this results in half my tea going down the drain or the much-dreaded microwave reheat. My brother-in-law gifted me this mug warmer as a solution, and it’s genuinely changed my life. It has different temperature settings so you can adjust it depending on what you’re drinking, plus it’s programmed with a timed automatic shut-off so you don’t have to worry about leaving it on and somehow burning the house down. Never having to drink cold, grey tea might actually be the best gift I’ve ever received.” — Lara, contributor |
