Are You a Victim of Office Air?!
ICYMI, TikTok creator Noa Donlan went viral recently for her post about the “office air” effect. 💨 🏢 It’s that all-too-familiar sensation of showing up to the office looking cute, only for your hair to fall flat and frizzy while your makeup starts to flake and crease (and for some reason, you can’t stop sneezing) by lunchtime. And three new zits appeared on your face, too?!
While this might feel like a unique-to-you experience, the millions of views and thousands of comments Donlan has racked up confirm that it’s anything but. We’re all victims of that damn office air, and TBH, it makes a whole lot of sense!
Unlike the air in your home, the air at the office is often drier because it’s being recirculated through heavy-duty air conditioning and heating systems, and all those computers and printers are only compounding the issue by generating heat and drying out the air further. Add in low ventilation (a.k.a. those windows that don’t open) and the harsh cleaning chemicals used on all the surfaces in the office, and you’ve got a perfect recipe for “office air.”
Thankfully, there are a few simple upgrades you can make to your desk setup to counteract the effects ASAP.

The simplest method for fighting dry AF conditions is to add a little moisture. If you have the space for it, a small desk humidifier (how cute is this one that looks like a flower?!) can give you a daily boost, and many options plug right into your laptop via USB.
If this is a no-go for your office, stash a hypochlorous acid spray (like this one from Tower 28) in your desk drawer and give yourself a quick spritz throughout the day to hydrate and fight bacteria.
🙅♀️ Just say “no” to frizz
The reason your hair is frizzing out midday is because it’s drying TF out! Rubbing in a little hair oil (we love this Smooth & Shine Hair Oil from Fable & Mane) before you head to the office can help tame the frizz throughout the day and repair it long-term.
On a budget? Our fave frugal method for combating frizz and static is to rub a pea-sized amount of our fave hand lotion between our palms and then smooth out our ends. It tames flyaways in a pinch! 👌
🌿 Go green
Houseplants like snake plants, peace lilies, and golden pothos all naturally filter out common indoor toxins and add moisture to the air simply by existing, 💧 so adding a few to your office desk set-up can be an easy way to combat that pesky “office air” (plus, they look so cute!). 🙂↕️
If your office happens to have a health and wellness budget, you could also petition for adding larger plants to the space so everyone can benefit. If your boss needs a little extra convincing, you can let them know that introducing plants into office environments can make staff happier and increase productivity by 15%. The better air is just an added perk. 😉
