PCOS Has Been Renamed PMOS. Here’s Why It Matters
Finally, we're taking women's health seriously!

Lara here, Girlboss’ contributing writer! 👋
You may have heard the recent news that PCOS, a condition that affects more than 170 million women worldwide (yup, you read that right), is officially being renamed PMOS. Today, we’re chatting with an expert about why this is such a huge win for women’s health. 💪

Finally, We’re Taking Women’s Health Seriously 👏
For years, patients and experts alike have been saying that the name PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is misleading because many patients don’t actually have cysts on their ovaries at all, despite what the name suggests. 😤 Even stars like Keke Palmer have struggled to get a diagnosis because their symptoms don’t “fit” the outdated name.
At long last, it’s finally changing: the condition has officially been renamed PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome) to better reflect its full scope!
To understand what this means for women’s health, we chatted with Dr. Margaret Lippincott, MD, the Center Director of the Multidisciplinary Care Center for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. 👩⚕️
🔎 Why is the name change from PCOS to PMOS significant?
“Affecting up to 1 in 8 women, PCOS has long been defined by irregular menstrual cycles, elevated androgens such as excess facial hair, and polycystic ovarian morphology. The updated name highlights the broader endocrine and metabolic risks associated with the condition, including diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, obesity, liver disease, and cardiovascular disease. Individuals with PMOS should therefore receive comprehensive screening and coordinated care that addresses both reproductive and systemic health.”
🙋♀️ How will this name change impact patients, providers, and public awareness?
“This shift in terminology aims to improve patient understanding, empower individuals to seek appropriate care, and reinforce the importance of comprehensive, evidence-based management. I hope every woman will ask, ‘Do I have PMOS?’"
🤔 What are common symptoms of PMOS that women should be aware of?
“Hard to predict or irregular menstrual cycles, increased hair growth on the body, hair loss on the top of the head, or uncontrolled acne. If women notice these symptoms, they should ask their provider about PMOS.”
💪 How can women better advocate for themselves if they suspect symptoms or have struggled to receive a clear diagnosis?
“It can take up to three years to get a diagnosis, and some women are diagnosed after menopause. Know the facts about PCOS: the Multidisciplinary Care Center for PCOS (soon to be PMOS) has information about the diagnosis and what to ask your doctor.”
