Talking Points
If You’re Too Busy
Earlier this week, we did a pulse check to see how we’re all feeling about the current state of social media given recent events (a.k.a. the mass social media platforms we used to know and love getting a conservative makeover right in front of our eyes). 👀
The results are in and your resounding response is… “Not good, thanks!!!” 😅 We offered a few alternative social media app suggestions in our Monday newsletter, but the Girlboss community offered some great suggestions, too. We know times are bleak, but we find a lot of solace in the community we’ve grown here, and we hope you do too. 🫂
Your Thoughts on the State of Social Media
“I would love to get off all social media but I can’t completely because of the pages I run. I deactivated what I could, though—Facebook, personal instagram pages, TikTok. I will miss Facebook marketplace but honestly, I feel better otherwise—plus no right-wing content pushed my way, and not making the rich oligarchs even richer.”
“I completely agree with the social media bleakness. I deleted my FB account about three years ago, I never got into Twitter, so I deleted that one pretty quickly (feeling like I dodged a bullet since that was pre-Elon Musk), never signed up for TikTok, and have recently deactivated my Instagram account due to Musk being added to the Board and the fact-checking being tossed out. At the moment, I’m trying to see if I can delete my Insta profile, and am considering starting a Bluesky account. We’ll see what happens.”
“Left TikTok and X. Leaving FB and IG—going to Fanbase.”
“I hid my Instagram and Facebook apps at the end of 2023, and honestly, I haven't looked back. The relief of not feeling the need to keep up on every single thing has made me much happier and content in real life. I never really used Twitter and have not been on since it changed to X. I also never got TikTok because I knew I did not need another app to scroll through (yes, I'm a millennial!). All of this just makes me feel more justified in steering clear of most social media. I get my fix of home decor and fashion content from occasionally perusing Pinterest, but other than that, I'm good.”
“Goodbye, social media…forever (insert Phoebe from Friends meme).”
“My Facebook exists but I rarely touch it, maybe once a year. Some groups I belong to use their event planning, so it's the only way to see what's coming up. But I don't use X, Insta, or TikTok, I and know I'm not missing a single thing. There are creative people everywhere, I don't want an algorithm controlling what I see next and creating an echo chamber of consumption. I'd rather be a creator, too!”
“Taking OUR power back requires all humans to DELETE our accounts from those platforms that are no longer free speech or safe spaces (and haven’t been for a while now).”
“I don’t use Facebook beyond logging into other apps. IG is to show off, and when I need to, I'll share there. X took away my account once it converted so I have to figure out how to permanently delete my username. And everything you mentioned regarding apps I'll try. I am optimistic. I survived Reagan-era politics.
“Snapchat+”
“I've personally resurrected my Tumblr accounts from my university days. Chaotic AF, filled with Buffy the Vampire Slayer content and fanfic. I've started another blog as a creative outlet. After a week without anything Meta, my brain feels so much better. Tumblr doesn't seem to be as addictive as mainstream social apps and it's filled with authentic weirdos 👽✌🏼”

The Dry Nail-Bed Rescuer“To quote the Vanessa Hudgens in High School Musical, ‘My nail beds are history!’ Especially in the winter. 😫 If I don’t moisturize them every single day, they get super cracked and painfully dry, so this pocket-sized cuticle oil from L’Occitane has been the most important essential in my purse (minus my emotional support water bottle and antacids, duh. IBS girlies unite!). It’s made with shea oil, sunflower oil, and sweet almond oil and comes in a super-convenient brush applicator. I didn’t even know I needed this until I got it for Christmas, and now I don’t know how I lived without it for so long.” — Victoria, executive editor |
The Vegetarian Recipe That Feels Too Good to Be True“In the spirit of eating healthier in the new year, I’ve been on the hunt for new plant-based recipes to make on busy weeknights when I’m limited on time and energy. I think I’ve officially found the holy grail with this recipe. I made it for the first time last night and it’s already earned a spot on my permanent rotation: it’s insanely affordable, comes together in literally 10 minutes with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry, and is so packed with flavor! I served it over steamed rice with some sautéed Chinese greens on the side, and it was honestly the perfect weeknight dinner.” — Lara, contributor |
The Winter Accessory That’s Stylish Yet Practical“If you’re braving the cold, do it in style. This GANNI Wool Balaclava is the ultimate cozy-chic winter accessory, blending practicality with a fashion-forward edge. Crafted from soft, responsible wool, it keeps you warm while ticking all the sustainability boxes.
