How to Know When It’s Time to Quit Your Job
What if giving up wasn’t a bad thing? 🤔
According to Lindsay Crouse, author of the just-released book The Case for Quitting, it doesn’t have to be. Crouse’s book challenges the myth that perseverance is a virtue—and offers a framework for knowing when walking away is the smarter play.
Here, she’s breaking down how you can figure out if quitting is right for you. 👇
✅ Why do you think quitting can sometimes be the smartest move?
“Many of us understandably pride ourselves on our ability to work hard and persevere against the inevitable challenges life throws at us. But misplaced perseverance backfires. It can lead us to push against dead ends, pouring ourselves into futile goals that we lack real ability to achieve.
When this happens, and we fail to quit, we waste precious resources—attention, money, drive—on failing quests. The work itself keeps us from registering the mounting costs, or even recognizing that we’re failing at all.
In this scenario, quitting is the smartest (and most realistic) way out. As much as it feels like failure, the failure has already happened; continuing only brings more failure. Quitting frees us to redirect energy to pursuits where we can succeed—and lets us be happier, too.”
🌟 How can we reframe quitting as a strategic decision instead of a personal defeat?
“Why do you want to quit? Is it because you’re tired and just need to recharge? Is it because you’re frustrated? Don’t quit on a bad day.
But also, if you are growing further away from your goal over time, or if failure has already happened and you don’t have control over success—the defeat has already happened, and will only grow the longer you stay or fight. So the rational move is to stop and find a better scenario where you might be better set up to succeed.”
🔥 What are common signs that ambition has crossed the line into "success addiction”?
“When you keep moving the goalposts of success and can never be satisfied—when you keep telling yourself that after this next deadline, or after this next race, once you hit this number, you can finally quit, you may be falling into the arrival fallacy, where the work itself becomes as addictive as the success it presumably brings, and you can never achieve enough to stop.
You might consider your motivations for striving, and what you’re getting in return for all this pursuit. Is the quest energizing, or exhausting? Grinding can feel like a treadmill that never stops. What would it take to finally have enough and feel satisfied?”
✏️ What questions should we ask ourselves to determine if quitting is the right move or not?
“Remember that continuing is a decision, too. Ask: If I continue doing this, what will my life be in five years, or 10? Why am I continuing—is it because I am owning the decision to keep doing this, or because I’m scared of what will happen if I stop?
When I say I can’t quit, what am I basing this on—actual numbers and facts—or my desire to avoid disruption? Uncertainty makes us uncomfortable with risks, but it only tells half the story.
We may not know how bad it might be if we quit, but we forget we also may not know how good it might be. Meanwhile, we usually know what it will be like if we stay. Is that an answer you want to live with?”
Still wondering if you should quit your job? This decision chart will help.
