How to Make Winter Suck a Little Less 🥶
Feeling blue? You’re not alone: 41% of Americans say their mood declines during the winter, and women, especially, find that it impacts their mental health, according to the American Psychiatric Association. 😥
And yet, other countries around the world don’t just tolerate winter; they thrive in it. 🎉 Kari Leibowitz, author of How to Winter, moved to Norway to crack the winter happiness code. And according to her, a positive mindset is the biggest determining factor: “We can start shaping our own mindset intentionally and deliberately,” she told TIME. Here’s how:
🤬 No winter trash talk!
Think of it as positive affirmations for the season, because talking about all the things you hate about winter will only draw your attention to it more. Instead of saying “It’s so gross outside” or “I hate the cold,” try focusing on the parts of it you do enjoy, like “I love the way everything looks so bright after it snows” or “It feels so good to be in my cozy house after being out in the cold.”
❄️ Create cold-weather traditions
Who says traditions are just for the holidays? Carving out special moments when the weather gets you down can give you something to look forward to and can create long-term positive associations with the season. Huge blizzard? Grab a mixing bowl and make homemade ice cream in the snow! Dark, cold nights making you feel blah? Host an annual fondue or hotpot dinner to gather all of your favorite people together for a night over a delicious meal!
☃️ Go outside for fun
We have a feeling that your main outdoor activities currently include commuting to work, taking your dog out, and shoveling snow. Is it any wonder that you don’t love going outside in the winter?! Moving your body and getting fresh air are scientifically proven to improve your mood, so take advantage of the season and do things you can only do in cold weather: go skating at a local ice rink, build a snowman in your backyard, or go sledding at your local park. It’ll be fun, we promise!
